If Wayne Rooney wants to finish his career at Manchester United, and on Wednesday he hinted strongly that he does, he already appears to have the support of new boss Jose Mourinho.

Rooney has announced the plans for his testimonial match, due to take place between United and Everton on August 3, and he was described by Mourinho in the same press release as ‘England’s best player for over a decade’.

And while Mourinho will know such an endorsement will immediately endear him not just to the United captain but to the club’s fans, it would suggest the Portuguese wants the 30-year-old forward to remain a central figure in a club he will be looking to overhaul.
