Montella replaces Christian Brocchi, whose reign lasted barely three months following his replacement of Serbian Sinisa Mihajlovic for the final third of Milan's 2015/16 season. Promoted from his role as coach of AC Milan's Primavera, the former Milan midfielder was unable to guide the Rossoneri to a European place, the third season running Milan have missed out on continental qualification.
Montella, had once coached at Catania, Fiorentina and Roma, and also replaced Walter Zenga at Sampdoria early last season, helping guide the club to Serie A safety before accepting the offer to replace Brocchi. Montella's salary will be approximately $2.5 million a year plus bonuses as Milan boss, with the club paying around $550,000 to secure his services from Sampdoria.
