Arsene Wenger's strong pursuit of Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy is a radical departure from his normal transfer policy.
Wenger has signed only 11 English players in almost two decades at Arsenal, most of them teenagers, and never spent more than £16million on a homegrown player.
In contrast, Vardy is 29 – six years older than any other English players signed for money – and will cost at least £20million.
For every success like Sol Campbell, Wenger has also bought a Francis Jeffers-style dud. We run through the England players he's signed before, and which haven't worked out
And the English players that Wenger has signed fit nicely into a full XI in a 4-4-2 formation.
MATTHEW UPSON
£2million from Luton Town, 1997 (aged 18)
Centre-half was loaned out to three different clubs during his six years at Arsenal before he was sold to West Ham at a loss. Ironically, had a much more successful career later on and played for England at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Played 57 times in total for The Gunners
Success rating: 5/10
JERMAINE PENNANT
£2million from Notts County, 1999 (aged 16) Wenger was unable to tame the talented but troubled winger. Pennant was signed to be a star but made only two Premier League starts – scoring a hat-trick in one of them - before joining Birmingham City. He later played in a Champions League final for Liverpool but off-field problems dogged his career
Success rating: 3/10
FRANCIS JEFFERS
£8million from Everton, 2001 (aged 20)
Dubbed a fox in the box by Wenger, the striker was a disaster. Eighteen of his 22 Premier League appearances were as substitute. Made his England debut on the same night as Wayne Rooney but Wenger sold him to Charlton at a £5million loss after he was sent off against Manchester United
Success rating: 2/10
SOL CAMPBELL
Free transfer from Tottenham, 2001 (aged 26)
The most controversial Bosman signing ever, Cambpell was hated by Spurs fans for moving to their rivals. The England defender was a huge success at Arsenal, partnering Kolo Toure in The Invincibles team. But he suffered a meltdown in 2006 and asked to be substituted at half-time against West Ham.
Returned to Arsenal for a brief second spell in 2010.
Success rating: 8/10
RICHARD WRIGHT
£6million from Ipswich, 2001 (aged 23)
Meant to be the long-term successor for David Seaman when he became the most expensive keeper in England. However he lasted just a year before joining Everton, taking a Premier League medal with him after making 12 appearances. Recently spent four seasons at Manchester City without playing.
Success rating: 3/10
THEO WALCOTT
£9million from Southampton, 2006 (aged 16)
Wenger's first English signing for nearly five years, opinion is still divided on the flying winger. Played more than 300 times for Arsenal and won 43 England caps but injuries meant he never fulfilled the potential of England's youngest international at 17. His Gunners future currently in doubt.
Success rating: 7/10
LUKE FREEMAN
£200,000 from Gillingham, 2008 (aged 15)
Wenger took a punt on the teenage whizzkid from Gillingham but he moved on four years later to Stevenage without having played a first-team game for Arsenal. The creative midfielder is still only 24, he has just enjoyed a decent season for Championship club Bristol City
Success rating: 3/10
ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN
£12million from Southampton, 2011 (aged 17)
Another graduate from the famed Saints academy, Oxlade-Chamberlain has provided some dazzling moments but still hasn't trained on in the last couple of years as he'd hoped. More than half of the winger's 100 Premier League games have come as substitute (49-51) and may be sold this summer
Success rating: 6/10
CARL JENKINSON
£1million from Charlton, 2011 (aged 19)
Never made the right-back position his own at Arsenal and spent two seasons on loan at West Ham due to the emergence of Hector Bellerin. Suffered a bad cruciate ligament injury last season and returned immediately to Arsenal for his rehab. Played for Finland under-21s but won one senior cap for England.
Success rating: 4/10
CALUM CHAMBERS
£16million from Southampton, 2014 (aged 18)
Initially won rave reviews for his composure at right-back and centre-half, but Chambers has failed to maintain the momentum and not been a Premier League starter since December 28 against Bournemouth. Played for England in their successful Toulon tournament and may be sent on loan.
Success rating: 5/10
DANNY WELBECK
£16million from Manchester United, 2014 (aged 23)
Wenger looked to have pulled off a coup when Welbeck scored a Champions League hat-trick against Galatasaray a month after his arrival. But the England forward has been stricken by knee injuries since then and is currently out for nine months having suffered cartilage damage against Manchester City.
Success rating: 5/10
