Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday, donated N10 million to the Remo Traditional Council (RTC) to fly the remains of Akarigbo and paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo to Nigeria from the United Kingdom hospital, where he died. The government’s largesse is also expected to fund some traditional passage rites for the Oba who joined his ancestors last Saturday. Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, disclosed this while reading Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s letter of condolence to the RTC, which was delivered at the Akarigbo’s palace yesterday. Akarigbo, who until his death was chairman of Ogun State Council of Obas, died at the age of 80. The accountant-turned monarch, who ascended the throne on July 14, 1990 joined his ancestors Saturday evening in United Kingdom where he was flown to on July 17 after a brief illness. A delegation of the state government, led by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga paid a condolence visit to the Remo Traditional Council to commiserate with the people of Remoland over the demise of their monarch. The deputy governor, who presented the N10 million cheque to the Traditional Council, explained that the governor made the financial commitment to cover cost of bringing back the remains of Akarigbo to Nigeria. Onanuga, handed over the cheque to the Acting President of the Remo Traditional Council, the Elepe of Epe, Oba Adewale Osiberu in the presence of four Commissioners and other top government functionaries.
